Broadway Community Inc. (BCI)

“I remember how it used to feel to be standing on a corner begging for change. For eight years I smoked crack cocaine and lost everything: my children, my job, my apartment, my moral values, my character. It was not until I became homeless that help came my way.” - Willie

A Community lunch at BPCLike Willie, most Broadway Community Incorporated (BCI) members come first for a meal. Guests of the lunch program are offered a broad range of additional services, free medical care, advocacy and mail services. These services are provided by our partner agencies, Community Impact and Care for the Homeless. Those who are willing to commit to rehabilitation join the core program. In this process, people begin with recovery from substance abuse and move towards self-sufficient and useful lives.

BCI grew out of a soup kitchen begun by Broadway Presbyterian Church in 1982 to serve the poor of Harlem and surrounding communities. Many who came for a meal needed much more than food, and the church responded by creating an intensive program focusing on substance abuse recovery, education, work readiness, housing and building community.

“BCI has opened many gates for me. Today my life has meaning.” - Patricia

More than a self-help program, BCI encourages members to help and support each other practically, emotionally and spiritually.

One key to BCI’s success is that members manage many of its activities and services. For instance, participants prepare and serve meals in the soup kitchen and host the women’s shelter. They acquire basic work skills and, once formally enrolled, can receive modest weekly stipends.

BCI helps people turn their lives around through individual and group counseling, spiritual development, work readiness training and job opportunities, a women’s shelter, and art therapy.

BCI is a 501 c (3) not-for-profit corporation. Its doors are open to anyone seriously attempting to rebuild their lives.
