Children at Worship

Banging, rattling, scraping and clicking a variety of percussion instruments, our young children sometimes lead the processional with an African beat. Jesus knew that children have much to teach us about faith and discipleship.  We try to follow the way of Christ by inviting our young people to worship in ways that hold meaning for them, and by being attentive to how they might lead us.  Sure, we have a super Christmas Pageant, but there are lots more.

As a smaller congregation, we are able to integrate the gifts and ideas of young people into the full life of the church.  There’s an air of flexibility and hopefulness in the air at Broadway.  Kids feel at home in the sanctuary and welcomed during coffee (and cookie) hour.

“One of my favorite things about Broadway is that we truly ‘live’ the church year. Advent is a time to itself—Christmas doesn’t come too soon. The worship and music during Lent really made me experience the ideas of journeying and wilderness."

Sometimes, with rainbow scarves in hand, they dance during a hymn. Sometimes the Children’s Sermon comes alive as the children trudge through the sanctuary emulating the Israelites in the wilderness: “We’re hungry, Moses!  We’re thirsty!”  At Pentecost all the children receive red balloons to remember that the Holy Spirit has come.
